When I was a kid growing up in Manhattan I went to P.S.173.We had “assemblies” where the enrite school sat in the auditorium and sang.One day the teachers up on stage leading the singing suggested some Christian hymn. Lots of silence followed and the teachers asked why we didn’t know that hymn or the next hymns they suggested instead?We explained that most of us were Jewish. They switched to patriotic songs!
